MODIFICATIONS AT MSU PRIOR TO TESTING
- When the Horten IV was first flown at the MSU in 1954 the performance deficiences, observed during the DFS tests, were again evident.
- The likely causes of this were, that the wing surface was in poor condition and that flow separation was present over the aft canopy.
- Furthermore, it was thought that the exposed nose skid of the original design was causing unnecessary drag.
- Consequently, the following modifications were made to improve performance:
