MODIFICATIONS AT MSU PRIOR TO TESTING


  • When the Horten IV was first flown at the MSU in 1954 the performance deficiences, observed during the DFS tests, were again evident.
     
  • The likely causes of this were, that the wing surface was in poor condition and that flow separation was present over the aft canopy.
     
  • Furthermore, it was thought that the exposed nose skid of the original design was causing unnecessary drag.
     
  • Consequently, the following modifications were made to improve performance:
